Hideo Kojima says players will love or hate Xbox horror OD

Sophia Lillis stares at eerie opening door

Hideo Kojima, the famous video game creator, has shared a few more details about his upcoming Xbox horror game called OD. He says people will either love it or hate it just like how some people feel strongly about Marmite. Kojima is not too worried about how people will react at first because, for him, the real value of his work shows up years later.

OD was first revealed in 2023, but even now, Kojima has kept most of the game a mystery. What we do know is that the game will feature actors like Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. It also includes some creative input from Jordan Peele, who is well-known for making horror movies like Get Out and Nope.

Kojima described OD as being more than just a regular game. He said it’s “a game and at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media.” That means it could mix different styles of storytelling and technology in a way we haven’t seen before.

In a new interview with the fashion and culture magazine Ssense, Kojima mentioned that OD is “something totally different.” He said he knows many people won’t like it at first, but that’s okay with him. He believes that true opinions about a project come out after 10 or even 20 years.

This isn’t the first time Kojima has said something like this. He has often talked about how he doesn’t aim to please everyone. Earlier this year, after test players gave good feedback on his other game Death Stranding 2, Kojima explained that he doesn’t try to make games for the general crowd. He prefers to create things that are original, even if they’re not popular right away.

It’s interesting to note that Death Stranding got mixed reactions when it first came out. But over time, more and more players began to appreciate its unique style and ideas. Maybe the same will happen with OD.

A short clip from the OD reveal shows a young woman, played by Sophia Lillis, staring in fear at a slowly opening door. The scene reminds many fans of Kojima’s earlier horror project, P.T., which was never finished but still made a big impact.

Kojima is also working on another new game called Physint. This one is being made for PlayStation and will focus more on action and secret missions. He decided to work on it after going through a tough time with illness and surgery. That experience made him reflect on life and what truly matters to him. It also made him want to listen to the fans who kept asking him for a game similar to Metal Gear, one of the most famous series he helped create in the past.

According to Kojima, he hears from fans every day on social media, with many of them asking him to go back to making games like Metal Gear. So, Physint is his way of giving back to those loyal followers.

Just recently, Kojima released Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and it was well-received by both fans and critics. However, he won’t be involved in Konami’s upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, and he’s also said he won’t be playing it himself.

Kojima’s way of thinking might not be for everyone, but he continues to push boundaries in the gaming world. Whether OD becomes a hit right away or gains respect over time, it’s clear that Kojima is focused on making something new, creative, and personal.
