X dark mode settings have changed after the platform removed its in-app display toggle in a recent update. Instead of letting users switch night mode on or off inside the app, X now follows the device-level appearance setting on a phone or tablet.
That means X dark mode still exists, but users can no longer control it from within the app itself. When a device is set to dark mode, the app will match that preference automatically. When the device is not using dark mode, the app will display its standard light appearance.
The update marks a broader product shift rather than the removal of dark display behavior. In practical terms, X has moved visual control from an app-specific setting to the operating system, reducing one more layer of customization inside the platform.
According to the company’s product leadership, the change is intended to simplify the app experience and reduce interface issues linked to maintaining a separate theme control. The same approach is already used by some other major social apps.
Some users, however, have objected to losing direct control over their preferred viewing mode. For anyone who wants the darker look back, the only current option is to change the device setting so the full system uses dark mode.
