In a strategic move to bolster its offerings for runners, Strava has acquired Runna, a rapidly growing UK-based app known for its AI-driven personalized training plans. The acquisition aims to fill a significant gap in Strava’s platform by integrating structured coaching features, addressing long-standing user demands for in-app training guidance.

Founded in 2021 by Ben Parker and Dom Maskell, Runna has swiftly gained global traction, boasting users in over 180 countries. The app offers tailored training plans for various running goals, from beginners preparing for their first 5K to seasoned athletes tackling marathons and ultramarathons. Its success is attributed to a combination of advanced coaching technology and real-world conditioning plans developed by top running coaches.

While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, reports indicate that early investors in Runna have seen returns up to 30 times their original investment. The acquisition marks Strava’s first in the UK and is seen as a significant step in enhancing its services for its fastest-growing user base—runners.

Strava CEO Michael Martin emphasized that the acquisition is not an efficiency play but a strategic investment in growth. “For a while, Strava had created static, document-based plans for runners, but the reality is those were used very, very infrequently,” Martin stated. “We came to realize that, as it related to runners, that guidance was training plans.”

In the immediate term, both Strava and Runna will continue to operate as standalone apps. However, plans are underway to integrate Runna’s personalized coaching features with Strava’s route tracking and recording technologies, aiming for a seamless user experience. Subscription models for both platforms currently differ, and details on future pricing structures are yet to be finalized.

Runna’s co-founders have expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, viewing it as an opportunity to expand their reach and impact within the running community. The company has been profitable since 2023 and operates mainly on its earnings, with a lean operational model and steady subscriber growth.

This acquisition follows Strava’s previous purchase of Recover Athletics and aligns with its broader strategy to enhance value for users amidst economic uncertainties. By integrating Runna’s coaching capabilities, Strava aims to provide a more comprehensive platform for runners worldwide.
