On March 10, 2025, numerous users of Google’s second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices reported encountering an “Untrusted device” error when attempting to stream content. The error message indicates that the device couldn’t be verified, possibly due to outdated firmware, leading to concerns about the continued support for these older models.
Affected users have taken to platforms like Reddit to share their experiences, noting that attempts to troubleshoot, including device resets, have been unsuccessful. The issue appears isolated to the second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices, with newer models such as the third-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra remaining unaffected.
Google has acknowledged the problem. Spokesperson Nicol Addison stated that the company is aware of the issue affecting some older generation Chromecasts and is actively working on a fix.
The second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio were both released in September 2015, making them among Google’s longest-standing streaming devices. Despite their age, these devices have continued to receive firmware updates, with the latest being version 1.56.x. This ongoing support had reassured users of their continued functionality.
In August 2023, Google officially discontinued the Chromecast product line but assured users that it would continue to provide software and security updates for the latest devices. The recent issues with the second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio have raised concerns among users about the future support for these devices.
Users are advised to await further updates from Google regarding a resolution to this issue. In the meantime, some have attempted workarounds, such as resetting the device and manually setting the date to before March 9, 2025, to restore casting functionality. However, these methods are unofficial and may not resolve the problem for all users.
As Google works towards a fix, users of the affected Chromecast models are encouraged to monitor official channels for updates and avoid making significant changes to their devices that could further complicate the issue.
