Google is beginning to let some people change their @gmail.com email address without creating a new account or losing access to their inbox and Google services. The instructions first appeared on Google’s Hindi-language support pages, pointing to an early rollout in India or Hindi-speaking regions, with broader availability expected to expand gradually.
Under the approach described by 9to5 Google, a user’s original address remains as an alias, so messages sent to the old Gmail address will still arrive, and account data like email, photos, and Drive files stays intact. However, Google adds limits, including a 12-month waiting period before another change and restrictions that prevent users from deleting the newly chosen address. Previously, people who wanted a different Gmail address typically had to create a new account and manually move data over. Google has not yet given a timeline for when the feature will reach all users.
