This week’s cuts mark Microsoft’s largest since mid‑2022, trimming approximately 4% of its global headcount including hundreds in Redmond while redirecting investment toward AI and cloud infrastructure, part of an $80 billion commitment.

Phil Spencer, Xbox CEO, described the layoffs as essential to “protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential,” a strategy echoed by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who noted that AI could already write “20‑30 % of the code” in certain projects.
