Microsoft's Handheld Xbox 'Keenan' and Next-Gen Console Plans Revealed

Microsoft is reportedly developing a handheld gaming device, codenamed “Keenan,” in collaboration with a major PC gaming manufacturer, aiming for a release later this year. This initiative marks Microsoft’s strategic entry into the portable gaming market, positioning it to compete with established players like Nintendo.

Project Keenan is a collaborative effort between Microsoft and prominent PC gaming hardware manufacturers such as ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, and Razer. The device is expected to embody distinctive Xbox design elements, including the iconic Xbox guide button, ensuring brand recognition and a seamless user experience. Running on a full version of Windows, Keenan will provide access to the Microsoft Store, PC Game Pass, and compatibility with third-party applications like Steam, offering gamers a versatile platform for both Xbox and PC titles.

The introduction of Keenan is strategically timed to coincide with the anticipated release of Nintendo’s next-generation console, the Switch 2, expected later in 2025. By entering the handheld market, Microsoft aims to diversify its hardware offerings and attract a broader audience, particularly those seeking gaming experiences beyond traditional consoles.

In addition to the handheld device, Microsoft is reportedly developing a premium successor to the Xbox Series X, with a projected launch in 2027. This next-gen console is expected to integrate more closely with Windows, simplifying the process for developers porting games between PC and console platforms. The new system will prioritize backward compatibility, allowing gamers to enjoy legacy Xbox titles, and may support third-party storefronts such as the Epic Games Store and GOG. The integration of cloud gaming and artificial intelligence is anticipated to play a significant role in enhancing the gaming experience on this forthcoming console.

These developments underscore Microsoft’s commitment to offering diverse gaming experiences across multiple platforms. By expanding into handheld gaming and advancing console technology, Microsoft seeks to cater to a wide range of gaming preferences and maintain its competitive edge in the evolving gaming industry.
