U.S. Cellular has announced plans to lay off approximately 500 employees across Iowa, with the reductions set to take effect in June 2025. This move comes as the company progresses with the sale of its wireless operations to T-Mobile, a transaction valued at $4.4 billion.

In central Iowa, more than 140 positions will be eliminated across 13 communities, including Des Moines, Johnston, and Fort Dodge. Johnston is the most affected area in the central region, with 39 job losses anticipated.

The agreement between T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular encompasses the acquisition of U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations and approximately 30% of its spectrum assets across multiple bands. This acquisition aims to enhance T-Mobile’s coverage and capacity, particularly benefiting rural areas with improved 5G access.

U.S. Cellular’s Chair, LeRoy Carlson Jr., stated that the integration with T-Mobile is a strategic move to meet the rising demands of modern connectivity and to achieve necessary scale and investment.

Affected employees have been informed of the upcoming layoffs, with the final working day for Iowa staff scheduled for June 2, 2025. U.S. Cellular has expressed its commitment to assisting impacted employees during this transition period.

The completion of T-Mobile’s acquisition of U.S. Cellular’s assets is expected by mid-2025. This transition is anticipated to bolster T-Mobile’s presence in Iowa, offering enhanced services to both existing and new customers.
