Ring has rolled out a new security feature called Ring Verify, aiming to help users confirm whether videos recorded by its devices remain authentic. The update responds to growing concerns around edited footage and AI-generated video manipulation.
Ring Verify works by attaching a digital authenticity seal to videos recorded by Ring cameras. This seal is applied automatically when users download footage from Ring’s cloud storage, starting with recordings made after December 2025.
How Ring Verify Works
- Each eligible video receives a built in authenticity seal
- The seal confirms whether the file has been altered after download
- Users can upload videos to Ring’s verification tool
- Videos are labeled as verified or not verified
If any changes occur after download, the system breaks the seal. Even small edits such as trimming, cropping, re-encoding or brightness adjustments can cause a video to fail verification.
Where the System Falls Short
Ring Verify only confirms whether a video was changed. It does not explain how, where or why the modification happened. This limits its usefulness when evaluating sophisticated AI-generated fakes.
Important Limitations at a Glance
The verification system follows C2PA standards, focusing on file integrity rather than deepfake detection. While Ring Verify adds a layer of trust, it does not fully solve the challenge of identifying advanced AI video manipulation.
