Samsung Electronics is mourning the unexpected loss of its co-CEO and Vice Chairman, Han Jong-hee, who passed away at the age of 63 due to a heart attack. Han collapsed during his daughter’s wedding and was transported to Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, where he was later pronounced dead.
Han’s career at Samsung spanned 37 years, beginning in 1988 as a technician. He steadily ascended the corporate ladder, ultimately being appointed co-CEO and Vice Chairman in 2022. In these roles, he oversaw the company’s consumer electronics and mobile devices divisions.
Under Han’s leadership, Samsung maintained its position as the world’s leading television manufacturer for 19 consecutive years. He was instrumental in integrating advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, into Samsung’s product lineup, reinforcing the company’s reputation for innovation.
Han’s passing comes at a challenging time for Samsung. The company has been grappling with declining stock prices and increased competition from rivals like Apple, SK Hynix, and TSMC. Additionally, Samsung has faced hurdles in the AI semiconductor market and has been impacted by changes in U.S. trade policy and competition from Chinese firms. In response to these challenges, Han had recently addressed shareholders, apologizing for the company’s performance and pledging to navigate future industry obstacles. He also played a key role in Samsung’s strategic decision to invest $44 billion in Texas to enhance chip manufacturing capabilities, aiming to bolster the company’s competitiveness in the semiconductor sector.
Following Han’s death, Jun Young-hyun, the co-CEO responsible for Samsung’s semiconductor business, will assume the role of sole CEO. Jun’s leadership will be crucial as the company strives to address ongoing challenges and maintain its position as a global technology leader.
Han Jong-hee’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday, and he will be laid to rest at the Sian Family Memorial Park. His contributions to Samsung and the broader technology industry have left an indelible mark, and he will be remembered for his dedication and visionary leadership.
