Tech Aero IBEC: Elevating RC Ignition Performance

Tech Aero IBEC

Overview

In the world of remote control (RC) model aircraft, precision, reliability and safety are paramount. A key component in achieving these goals is the Tech-Aero Ultra Ignition Battery Eliminator Circuit, or IBEC for short.

This aero tech device is engineered to meet the exacting demands of model aviation enthusiasts. Here, we explain the features and advantages of the Tech-Aero IBEC, providing you with a complete understanding of its capabilities.

Seamless Compatibility

The Tech-Aero IBEC is designed with the utmost versatility in mind. It seamlessly integrates with single and multi-cylinder model Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) modules, offering selectable voltage outputs of 5.0V, 5.3V, 6.1V, and 6.6V.

This adaptability ensures that the IBEC can accommodate various power requirements, allowing you to optimize your ignition system for peak performance.

Power and Convenience

Needing a separate ignition battery and mechanical on/off switch has become old. The Tech-Aero IBEC streamlines your setup by eliminating these requirements. This not only reduces complexity but also minimizes the chances of human error, ensuring that your RC model operates smoothly and reliably.

Transmitter Control

One of the standout features of the Tech-Aero IBEC is its transmitter-controlled CDI ignition power. Through a spare receiver auxiliary channel, you gain enhanced flexibility and safety.

You have the power to control when your ignition system is active, adding an extra layer of security to your RC model.

Advanced Filtering of Tech Aero IBEC

One of the most critical aspects of the Tech-Aero IBEC is its four-stage filtering system. This technology eliminates interference from CDI ignition noise in the wiring path to the receiver, making it compatible with 2.4 GHz Spread Spectrum radio receivers. Let’s break down the four stages of this advanced filtering system:

  1. Filter Stages 1 & 2: These stages feature a second-order common mode LC power lead filter, effectively reducing unwanted noise.
  2. Filter Stage 3: Triple power filter capacitors create a low-pass filter and enhance peak impulse current delivery to the CDI module. This ensures consistent performance during varying RPMs.
  3. Filter Stage 4: An optical isolator circuit acts as a safeguard, preventing stray noise from affecting the sensitive receiver electronics through the signal lead.

Reliable Power Regulation

The Tech-Aero IBEC employs a high-precision, low-dropout power regulator design. This design not only ensures that the receiver bus remains isolated but also guarantees superior performance during peak current demands. This level of power regulation is critical for maintaining the integrity of your RC model’s electrical systems.

Tech Aero’s Universal Compatibility

The Tech-Aero IBEC caters to a wide range of battery chemistries commonly used in the RC world.

With a practical input voltage range from 6.0V to 8.4V, it accommodates the majority of power sources used in radio control applications.

Visual Indication

To keep you informed, the Tech-Aero IBEC features a bright 5mm LED CDI power indicator. With a mounting bezel, you can easily view the status of your CDI system.

Available in LED colors include red, green, blue, amber and white, allowing you to customize the indicator to your liking.

Compact and Lightweight

The Tech Aero is designed with practicality in mind. It features high-reliability surface mount components, reducing its weight to a mere 0.8 oz. Its compact dimensions of 1” x 1 ¾” make it easy to integrate into your RC model without adding unnecessary bulk.

Extensive Wiring

The Tech IBEC comes with heavy-duty 22-gauge twisted wire power extensions, providing flexibility in your installation. These extensions help you reach various components of your RC model, ensuring a clean and organized setup.

Setting Up the IBEC Auxiliary Channel

Configuring the midpoint auxiliary channel setting is an essential step in ensuring that the Tech-Aero IBEC operates as desired. To set this up:

  • Adjust the travel direction on the transmitter auxiliary channel configuration to align with the ON and OFF settings for your CDI module’s “Killswitch” function.
  • Adjust the auxiliary channel ATV (travel endpoints) to 100% or more in each direction, with sub trim zeroed out for neutrality.
  • Establish a failsafe condition for the Ultra IBEC auxiliary channel, so that it can initiate the “Kill Switch” function to stop the engine in the event of lost radio communications.

Managing Power Consumption

The current draw from the receiver flight pack battery varies depending on the specifics of your CDI ignition module.

As a general rule of thumb, plan for approximately 100 to 120 MAh per spark plug (with a maximum of two cylinders per Ultra IBEC) for a 10-minute flight. The exact usage depends on the CDI module’s design and your flying style.

It is advisable to monitor battery capacity regularly to determine the actual usage. Pre-flight checks are crucial to ensure you have sufficient battery capacity for a safe flight.

Versatile Voltage Configuration

It offers the flexibility to configure the voltage output to meet the requirements of various CDI modules.

However, it’s important to note that the voltage output level will not exceed the voltage provided to it by the receiver’s power bus. Ensure that your power source meets the required voltage for your CDI module.

Secure Mounting

Properly mounting the Tech Ultra Ignition Battery Eliminator Circuit is essential for its reliability. Use a Velcro piece with at least ¼” foam padding underneath the unit to secure it in place. This ensures a snug but gentle fit.

Alternatively, you can use adhesive-backed Velcro on the bottom side of the circuit board. The 3mm LED can be strategically positioned for easy monitoring during engine starting operations, with the option to easily reposition it if needed.

Wrapping Up

The Aero Tech IBEC stands as a pinnacle of innovation in the world of RC model aircraft. With its remarkable features, including versatile voltage selection, transmitter control and advanced filtering, it elevates the performance, reliability & safety of your ignition system.

Whether you’re a seasoned pilot or a novice enthusiast, the Tech-Aero IBEC is an important component to ensure your RC model operates at its peak.
