X lets users edit anyone’s images with AI, sparking artist backlash

AI tool editing a public image on X as artists protest unauthorized image manipulation

X has launched a new artificial intelligence feature that allows users to edit any public image on the platform without the creator’s consent, triggering immediate backlash from artists. According to the sources, the tool went live on December 24 and enables image editing through a long-press or menu option using Grok AI, with results posted as comments. The feature includes no opt-out option or permission requirement, raising concerns about misuse and unauthorized alterations.

Artists and illustrators say the update strips them of control over their work and could lead to harassment, exploitation, or unapproved AI training. Creators such as animator Seter and manga artist Boichi criticized the lack of safeguards, with many saying they plan to remove their work or leave the platform. Disabling Grok reportedly does not work, and common protective tools fail, leaving low-quality GIFs, or not posting images at all as the only workaround.

X has not commented publicly as of December 25. Elon Musk praised the feature as “insanely good,” while users called for consent controls and clearer protections. The controversy adds to ongoing challenges for X, as rival Bluesky continues to gain users, highlighting pressure on X to respond.
