March 18, 2025 – Xfer Records has officially launched Serum 2, a significant update to its popular wavetable synthesizer plugin. This release transforms Serum into a versatile multi-engine synthesizer, incorporating new oscillator types such as multi-samples, granular synthesis, sample-based oscillators, and spectral synthesis.
The introduction of multiple oscillator engines marks a pivotal enhancement in Serum 2. While the original Serum focused primarily on wavetable synthesis, the new version broadens its scope to include:
- Sample and Multi-Sample Engines: These engines offer classic sampler functionalities, including looping with snap detection, flexible loop modulation, tape-stop effects, real-time sample slicing, and FM/PD/Distortion capabilities.
- Spectral Oscillator: This feature provides real-time harmonic resynthesis and transient detection, allowing for intricate sound-shaping possibilities.
Additionally, the original wavetable engine now features smooth interpolation, enabling seamless transitions between waveforms. New warp modes further expand modulation options by enhancing FM, phase distortion, and filtering capabilities.
Serum 2 introduces several improvements to its modulation and effects sections:
- Flexible Effects Routing: Users can now customize the signal flow, allowing for more creative sound design.
- Redesigned Arpeggiator and Clip Sequencer: These tools facilitate complex rhythmic patterns and sequences, enhancing the plugin’s versatility.
- Expanded LFO Engine: With a wider variety of shapes, the Low-Frequency Oscillator (LFO) engine offers more dynamic modulation possibilities.
- Additional Macro Controls: Four extra macro controls have been added, making sound manipulation more intuitive.
To complement these features, Serum 2 introduces a substantial library of sounds:
- Presets: The update includes 626 new presets, providing users with a broad spectrum of ready-to-use sounds.
- Wavetables: An additional 288 wavetables have been added, offering more options for sound creation.
Serum 2 is currently available at an introductory price of $189, with the regular price set at $249. Existing Serum 1 users can upgrade to Serum 2 at no additional cost. The plugin is compatible with 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
