Octopus-Backed Y Corp Plans UK Mobile Relaunch

Octopus-Backed Y Corp Plans UK Mobile Relaunch
Published Date: 30/04/2025

Y Corporation (Y Corp), a venture supported by Octopus Group through its subsidiary Fern Trading, is reportedly preparing to re-enter the UK mobile telecommunications arena. This move follows the company’s earlier attempt with Ymobile, a data-only eSIM mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which was launched in November 2024 but suspended shortly thereafter.

Ymobile debuted as the UK’s first data-centric eSIM MVNO, offering a range of 30-day rolling data plans without traditional voice or SMS services. Operating on Three UK’s 4G and 5G networks, the service aimed to cater to users seeking a streamlined, environmentally friendly alternative to conventional mobile plans. However, within a month, the service was abruptly paused, and customers were informed that Ymobile was in a “beta phase,” leading to the termination of plans by January 2025.

Despite the initial setback, Y Corp appears undeterred in its ambition to establish a foothold in the UK mobile market. In January 2025, the company appointed Adam Dunlop, former Consumer Chief at TalkTalk, as a director to spearhead its mobile initiatives. Reports suggest that Y Corp is exploring opportunities to launch a new MVNO, potentially leveraging existing wholesale agreements with Three UK.

The UK mobile market is predominantly controlled by four major operators: EE, Virgin Media O2, Vodafone, and Three. However, MVNOs have been gaining traction, particularly with the rise of SIM-only demand and favorable wholesale terms. Research indicates that in 2024, traditional network operators lost contract subscribers, while MVNOs gained 1.6 million, highlighting a trend toward more flexible offerings.

While Y Corp’s initial venture with Ymobile faced challenges, the company’s renewed efforts, bolstered by strategic leadership and market trends favoring MVNOs, suggest a continued interest in disrupting the UK mobile landscape. As the company prepares for a potential relaunch, industry observers will be watching closely to see how Y Corp navigates the competitive telecommunications sector.
