Tesla is entering the Indian auto market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex on July 15, 2025. The store will initially welcome VIPs and partners, with the public gaining access shortly after. The company has shipped several Model Y SUVs from Shanghai, with each unit valued at around ₹27.7 lakh. After import duties, the final cost is expected to cross $56,000 per vehicle.
Model Y deliveries will begin by late August, and Tesla is also preparing to open a second showroom in New Delhi later this month. Hiring for staff across sales and service roles is already underway.
- Tesla Begins Its India Journey: This marks Tesla’s official entry into one of the world’s biggest car markets. The brand aims to capture India’s growing interest in premium electric vehicles.
- High Prices, But High Hopes: Despite high import duties making Teslas expensive, early demand remains strong. Many customers are excited to finally see Tesla’s presence in India.
- Expansion Plans in Full Swing: After Mumbai, Tesla will launch in New Delhi to expand its footprint. The company is actively recruiting staff to support its Indian operations.
Although Elon Musk has previously criticized India’s high import taxes, Tesla has decided to go ahead with selling imported vehicles for now. There are no confirmed plans yet for local manufacturing in India. However, the Indian government has introduced new policies to attract EV companies to set up production locally, so future developments are possible.
Tesla’s entry into India could help boost the country’s EV adoption rate, which is still low compared to other countries. While EVs currently make up just about 5% of car sales in India, the presence of a global player like Tesla could push more people toward electric options. Still, with high price tags, Tesla may appeal more to premium buyers rather than the average car customer.
