An Xfinity outage disrupted internet service across Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama campus and other parts of West Alabama as crews worked to restore connectivity. The service interruption was reported across a wide area, with one account saying thousands of subscribers in the Tuscaloosa ZIP code were affected.
The Xfinity outage also exposed conflicting public restoration messages. One update linked the disruption to significant storm damage but did not give a time for service to return. Another official message said full restoration in much of the area could happen after 7:00 p.m., while also noting that some locations may recover sooner than others.
That difference in public guidance added to the disruption. For customers, the issue was not only the loss of internet access, but also the lack of one clear restoration timeline during an active regional outage. That made it harder for residents, students and businesses to judge when normal service might resume.
The Xfinity outage also affected access to local programming for some viewers who rely on their usual service. As a workaround, users were directed to streaming apps on smart TVs and news apps on smartphones and tablets while restoration work continued.
