Nvidia is reportedly planning to invest up to $3 billion in Lancium, a U.S.-based power infrastructure company involved in the Stargate artificial intelligence data-center project in Texas.
The reported investment would further strengthen Nvidia’s position in the fast-growing AI infrastructure market. Nvidia is already the leading supplier of GPUs used to train and run artificial intelligence systems, but the company is increasingly connected to the wider infrastructure needed to operate massive AI data centers.
Under the reported plan, Nvidia would initially invest around $2 billion in Lancium for a stake of roughly 20%. An additional investment of as much as $1 billion could follow if Lancium reaches certain targets, including progress related to electricity-grid connections.
The deal would reportedly value Lancium and its portfolio of land and power connections at an enterprise value of around $10 billion. The new funding could help the company expand its operations as demand for electricity and computing capacity continues to rise because of artificial intelligence. Lancium is also reportedly considering a possible initial public offering in 2027.
Lancium has become particularly important because of its connection to Stargate, the major AI infrastructure initiative involving OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank. Stargate was announced as a large-scale effort to build computing infrastructure needed to support the next generation of artificial intelligence services in the United States.
Lancium owns a roughly 1,000-acre campus in Abilene, Texas, which serves as the first operational site connected with the Stargate initiative. Large facilities like this require enormous amounts of electricity, cooling equipment, networking systems and advanced computing hardware.
That makes power infrastructure an increasingly important part of the AI race. Building more advanced AI models is no longer only about developing faster processors. Technology companies also need reliable access to land, electricity, cooling systems and data-center capacity capable of supporting thousands of high-performance chips.
For Nvidia, an investment in Lancium could provide a closer connection to the infrastructure where large numbers of its AI processors may eventually operate. Nvidia has benefited heavily from the global expansion of generative AI, as cloud providers, technology companies and AI developers continue buying its GPUs for increasingly powerful computing systems.
The reported investment also shows how AI spending is spreading beyond semiconductor companies. Billions of dollars are now flowing into data centers, energy systems and other infrastructure required to keep AI services running.
Neither Nvidia nor Lancium had publicly confirmed the reported investment details at the time of the initial reports. Therefore, the final size and terms of the investment could still change.
If completed, the deal would be another major sign that Nvidia wants to remain closely involved in the expansion of AI infrastructure, not only through its chips but also through the massive facilities and power systems needed to run them.
