Ubisoft Teams Up With Nintendo to Improve Switch 2 VRR for 30fps

Ubisoft developers are coordinating with Nintendo to improve how variable refresh rate (VRR) works on Nintendo Switch 2, aiming to make lower-frame-rate games, according to the sources. The effort is being showcased in the Switch 2 version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where Ubisoft says it is trying to benefit from VRR in handheld mode while maintaining a 30fps target.

The sources provided say Ubisoft is using a frame-presentation technique that re-times how frames are shown so VRR can stay active even when the game is running at 30fps; the approach does not raise the frame rate, but can improve perceived smoothness and pacing. FRVR also reported that Ubisoft cited Star Wars Outlaws as another Switch 2 title using a similar method, and Ubisoft indicated the technique is now integrated into its Anvil engine, which could allow it to be reused in future releases.

If Nintendo adopts broader changes based on this work, players could see more consistent-feeling motion in more Switch 2 games that don’t aim for higher frame rates.
