Z.ai has launched GLM-5.3, a new artificial intelligence model focused heavily on coding, software development and advanced AI agent tasks. The latest model brings a major performance improvement over GLM-5.2 and is designed to handle more complex development work with greater accuracy.
One of the biggest upgrades is coding performance. Z.ai says GLM-5.3 delivers about a 50% improvement over GLM-5.2 on its internal Z.ai Code Bench. The company is positioning the model as its strongest open-weight model for programming so far.
GLM-5.3 is built to handle more than simple code generation. It can work on longer and more complicated development tasks where an AI needs to understand a project, make changes across multiple files, use development tools and continue working through several steps before reaching a result.
The model also shows stronger results on public evaluations designed to test AI agents and real-world development abilities. It improves significantly on Terminal-Bench 3.0, which evaluates how well AI systems can perform tasks inside terminal environments. Z.ai also reports stronger performance on Agents’ Last Exam, another benchmark focused on advanced agent capabilities.
A notable part of the GLM-5.3 update is that the improvements are largely connected to stronger post-training rather than simply making the underlying model much larger. This shows how AI companies are increasingly focusing on better training methods to improve reasoning, coding and agent behavior without relying only on increases in model size.
The stronger coding abilities could make GLM-5.3 useful for developers working on tasks such as generating code, finding bugs, modifying existing projects, working through terminal commands and completing longer software engineering workflows. These capabilities are becoming increasingly important as AI coding tools move from basic code suggestions toward agents that can complete larger parts of development projects.

GLM-5.3 is being made available through Z.ai’s coding ecosystem, including the GLM Coding Plan and ZCode. The company’s Coding Plan documentation now lists GLM-5.3 among its supported advanced models.

Open-weight models are becoming increasingly capable of handling tasks that previously required some of the most advanced closed AI systems.
