South Korean developer Pearl Abyss released Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown on October 29, 2026, expanding its open-world action-adventure game with ocean exploration, new islands, character storylines, and combat challenges. The paid downloadable content (DLC) introduces new activities across the fantasy world of Pywel, including shipbuilding, underwater exploration, and expanded character interactions. Pearl Abyss confirmed the launch in its official release announcement.
Crimson Desert originally launched on March 19, 2026. Since then, Pearl Abyss has released several updates to improve gameplay and introduce additional features. Existing owners received the Enhanced upgrade for free, but Charting the Unknown is a separate paid expansion. Players should check their platform’s store for the DLC’s regional pricing and availability before purchasing it.
One of the biggest additions is ocean exploration, allowing players to discover new islands, underwater ruins, hidden treasures, and sea creatures. Players can dive underwater without completing the main story, although staying beneath the surface uses a breath meter. The expansion also introduces an ocean-focused quest called A Wider World, which becomes available after completing Howling Hill and upgrading Greymane Camp to the required level.
Ships are another major feature of the expansion. Players can build vessels through dispatch missions or purchase them from fleetmasters across Pywel. They can also customize ships with parts sold in Demeniss and Delesyia, while maritime trading introduces new goods to transport across the ocean. Access to the shipbuilding questline requires progress after establishing Greymane Camp at Howling Hill.
According to Pearl Abyss’s official Version 2.04.00 patch notes, the DLC adds one personal story quest each for Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane. These missions become available in the Journal menu after players complete Journey’s End in the main storyline. The quests continue the characters’ individual journeys through Pywel, but newcomers must finish the required main-story content before they can begin them.
Beyond exploration and combat, Charting the Unknown introduces deeper character relationships that can eventually lead to romance and marriage. The DLC also expands housing customization, allowing players to design layouts and adjust structural elements such as walls and windows. The upgraded construction tools become available after players establish Greymane Camp at Howling Hill and complete Luke’s Request within the Grounds of the Sunrise faction quest.
Players can also decorate selected castles after completing the required quests and liberating the strongholds. The DLC adds the ability to rent and manage facilities such as restaurants, sawmills, smithies, and tailor’s shops. These businesses can continue operating while players explore other parts of Pywel, offering additional activities outside combat and story missions.
For players who enjoy challenging combat, the expansion introduces the Garden of Trials, a boss-focused activity unlocked after completing Journey’s End in the main story. The challenge features ten groups of battles and allows players to fight alone or use multiple playable characters, including Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane. Food cannot be used to recover health during the challenge, making preparation and combat skills especially important.
Pearl Abyss originally scheduled Charting the Unknown for October 15, 2026, but delayed its release by two weeks to allow additional development and testing. After the expansion launched on October 29, the developer released Version 2.04.02 on October 30. The hotfix addressed occasional crashes, ships that remained stationary, missing crew members, and interactions that could fail while diving underwater. Players can review the official October 30 hotfix notes for the complete list of changes.

Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC storefronts, and Steam on Mac. Pearl Abyss also announced DLC availability through the Mac App Store, although its October 30 patch notes still listed the Mac App Store update rollout as pending. Mac players should check their storefront and installed game version before starting the expansion.
For PC players, TechBonafide has also covered NVIDIA RTX driver and DLSS 4.5 support for Crimson Desert’s expansion, including the graphics technologies available on compatible hardware.
A five-hour trial of the Crimson Desert Enhanced base game is available to Xbox players and eligible PlayStation Plus Premium or Deluxe subscribers. The trial does not include Charting the Unknown, is limited to one use per account, and allows players to carry their progress into the full game if purchased. Pearl Abyss says the Xbox trial is available until January 7, 2027, while eligible PlayStation subscribers can access the trial until October 29, 2027.
Overall, Charting the Unknown gives returning Crimson Desert players new locations to explore, additional story quests, and more activities beyond the original adventure. Players should check which quests they have completed, confirm DLC availability on their platform, and install the latest game update before starting the expansion.
