Qantas is preparing major updates to its Frequent Flyer program, giving members new ways to earn Status Credits through everyday spending as well as flights. According to Qantas’ official program update, the first changes will begin on December 8, 2026, including Status Credit rollover and new earning opportunities across participating services. Further changes to membership requirements and benefits are planned for 2027.
From December 8, 2026, Qantas Frequent Flyer members will be able to earn up to 140 Status Credits each membership year through eligible spending across ten categories. These include credit cards, banking, insurance, car services, home utilities, hotels, holidays, shopping, retail and sustainability activities. Members must earn a required number of eligible Qantas Points within a category to unlock Status Credits. For example, earning 20,000 eligible Qantas Points through credit cards will unlock 20 Status Credits, while earning 1,000 eligible points through everyday shopping will unlock 10 Status Credits. Members can review the full requirements through Qantas’ Status Credits on the ground information.
Status Credits are different from Qantas Points. While Qantas Points can be used for flights and other rewards, Status Credits help members reach higher membership levels. These levels offer benefits such as priority boarding, lounge access, and better travel services.
Another major change arriving on December 8, 2026, is Status Credit rollover. Eligible Silver members will be able to carry forward 25% of the Status Credits they earn above 300, up to a maximum of 100 credits. Gold members can roll over 50% of credits earned above 700, with a limit of 350. Platinum members can carry forward 50% of credits earned above 1,400, up to 500, while Platinum One members can roll over 50% of credits earned above 3,600, also capped at 500. The rollover will be processed automatically for eligible members and can help them reach or retain their status in the next membership year.
Qantas is also planning changes to membership renewal requirements later in 2027. Under the updated rules, members will need the same number of Status Credits to retain their tier as they need to attain it. Silver members will require 300 Status Credits, Gold members 700 and Platinum members 1,400 per membership year. Gold members previously needed 600 credits to renew their status. Members seeking Silver, Gold or Platinum status must also complete four eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights that earn Status Credits. Platinum One will retain its separate requirements. Qantas has not announced a specific implementation date for the new renewal targets beyond 2027.
Qantas is also improving its digital rewards experience. From December 8, 2026, members will be able to track their progress toward earning Status Credits through their online accounts and the MyQFF section of the Qantas mobile app. The updated tracking experience will help members see which eligible spending categories they have completed and how their activities contribute to membership status. Mobile services are increasingly important for travel planning and account management, a trend also discussed in TechBonafide’s article on how technology has impacted tourism.
Alongside these updates, Qantas will retire Points Club, Points Club Plus and Green Tier on December 8, 2026. Members who qualify for Points Club or Points Club Plus before the retirement date can continue receiving their existing benefits for the applicable membership period. Green Tier benefits will conclude on December 8, although eligible members with an unselected bonus reward will have 90 days from their qualification date to make their selection. Qantas plans to bring more benefits into its main membership tiers as part of the wider program changes.
Meanwhile, a separate Double Status Credits promotion for eligible Qantas Business Rewards members closed for registration and new bookings on October 20, 2026. Under the promotion, registered businesses and their eligible travelers can earn double Status Credits on qualifying Qantas-operated flights booked during the offer period for travel between October 21, 2026, and October 2, 2027. Eligible bookings must include the registered business’ Australian Business Number (ABN) and the traveler’s Frequent Flyer number. The promotion applies to eligible flights with a QF flight number and is separate from the wider Frequent Flyer program changes. Full eligibility requirements are available in the Qantas Business Rewards offer terms.
The Qantas changes highlight how airline loyalty programs are expanding beyond traditional flight rewards by connecting travel benefits with digital services and everyday spending. Other airlines are also using technology to improve the experience of loyalty program members. For example, TechBonafide recently covered how United Airlines is expanding Starlink Wi-Fi across its flights, with the service offered free to MileagePlus members on equipped aircraft.
For Qantas Frequent Flyer members, the upcoming changes will provide more ways to earn Status Credits, carry eligible excess credits into a new membership year and monitor progress through digital accounts. However, earning credits from everyday purchases will not remove all flight requirements, and some earning opportunities may depend on participating partners or financial products. Members should review the conditions before changing their spending habits or travel plans solely to earn additional Status Credits.
