Sony’s September PlayStation State of Play Reveals Major PS5 Games and Release Dates

Sony’s September PlayStation State of Play brought a strong mix of PS5 game announcements, new gameplay trailers and important release dates. The September 3, 2026 presentation also included a separate State of Play Japan broadcast, giving players a closer look at games coming from studios around the world and across Asia.

One of the biggest games shown was Marvel’s Wolverine. Sony presented another look at Insomniac Games’ action title as it moves closer to launch. Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to arrive exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. The game puts players in control of Logan and focuses on fast, aggressive combat using his claws, healing abilities and other mutant powers.

Square Enix also had a major presence during the event. Final Fantasy Resonance received a new trailer and is now confirmed to launch for PS5 on October 22, 2026. Sony also announced that a free PS5 demo is available, covering the entire first chapter. Players will be able to transfer their demo save data into the full game. The new footage also revealed that Sephiroth will appear in the game.

Another major announcement was Metro 2039. The next entry in the Metro series will launch on February 4, 2027, with the date moving to February 5 in some regions. The presentation showed console gameplay running on PS5 Pro and confirmed that the game will support ray tracing and a 60fps Performance Mode on PS5 and PS5 Pro.

Horror fans also received an important update on Until Dawn 2. The standalone sequel is officially coming to PS5 on January 28, 2027. The game follows a new group of characters on Akishima Island, where player choices can decide who survives. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on September 10, 2026.

Sony also introduced Hunter’s Moon, a new first-person historical folk-horror game. Players take the role of an accused woman trying to escape witch hunters in 17th-century England. The game launches on October 25 in North America and October 26 in regions including the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.

A new puzzle-focused adventure called Uncanyon was also revealed for PS5. The game is being developed by Graceful Decay, the studio behind Maquette, and uses alternate realities as an important part of its puzzle system. Uncanyon is planned for release sometime in 2027.

The showcase also featured new looks at games including Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted, Maneater 2, Gran Turismo 7 updates and several other upcoming PS5 projects. The State of Play Japan presentation added even more titles from Japanese and Asian developers, including games connected to Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest, Digimon and Fate.

Sony saved one of its biggest announcements for Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Square Enix showed extended gameplay from the next part of its Final Fantasy VII project and confirmed an April 8, 2027 release date for PlayStation 5. The game will expand exploration with the Highwind airship while also bringing back chocobo travel and adding new combat and exploration options.

Overall, the September State of Play gave PS5 owners a clearer picture of what is coming during the final months of 2026 and throughout 2027. With Marvel’s Wolverine arriving soon and major games such as Until Dawn 2, Metro 2039 and Final Fantasy VII Revelation now carrying firm dates, Sony is building a busy release schedule for PlayStation 5 players.
