The UK government has rejected calls to pause the construction of new artificial intelligence data centres, arguing that stopping development could hurt jobs, investment and national security.
The debate follows calls from Green Party leader Zack Polanski for the government to put the brakes on large new data centres. He raised concerns about the amount of electricity and water these facilities can use, particularly as the UK deals with pressure on water supplies and growing concerns about climate change.
AI data centres contain large numbers of powerful computer chips that are used to train and run artificial intelligence systems. As companies expand their AI services, demand for these facilities has increased quickly.
Polanski argued that the rapid construction of large data centres could put additional pressure on local electricity networks, water supplies and communities. The Green Party has called for a pause on major developments while stronger environmental rules and safeguards are considered.
However, the UK government has rejected the idea of a wider moratorium.
According to the government, stopping new data centres could push technology investment and skilled jobs to other countries. Officials also believe Britain needs its own computing infrastructure so important information, including sensitive health and defence data, does not have to depend heavily on facilities located overseas.
The government has previously classified data centres as critical national infrastructure, reflecting their growing importance to digital services, artificial intelligence and the wider economy.
That classification has become part of the political debate. Critics argue that large technology companies could receive too much support while communities deal with the environmental effects of new developments.
The government says the critical infrastructure status does not automatically give data centres priority over households for electricity or water. It also says the policy does not mean every proposed data centre will receive approval.
Officials want developers to use cleaner sources of electricity where possible, manage water responsibly, support British supply chains and create benefits for the communities where facilities are built.
Energy demand remains one of the biggest concerns. Data centres currently account for a relatively small but significant share of UK electricity consumption, but demand could rise sharply as artificial intelligence becomes more widely used.
Water use is also receiving greater attention because some data centres require large cooling systems to prevent powerful computing equipment from overheating. The issue becomes more sensitive during periods of drought or water shortages.

Despite those concerns, the government appears committed to expanding domestic AI infrastructure rather than stopping construction altogether. Its position is that stronger environmental standards and planning controls should be used to manage the impact instead of introducing a nationwide freeze.
