OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, 2026, introducing a faster, lower-cost model designed for computer-based tasks and professional work. In its official launch announcement, the company highlighted stronger visual reasoning, more precise computer use and clearer writing. Terra joins GPT-6.1 Sol, which arrived in September and remains aimed at more complex work such as coding and demanding multi-step tasks.
GPT-6.1 Terra can analyze images, use software tools, draft documents and follow instructions across several steps. OpenAI lists examples such as understanding technical drawings, completing forms and editing videos. For businesses, a possible use is processing invoices and moving their details into accounting systems. This wider interest in AI that works across apps is also reflected in OpenAI’s Dots AI agent. However, companies still need to test the model for their own tasks before relying on automation.
Speed is one of the biggest improvements. On Agents’ Last Exam, a benchmark covering professional computer-use tasks, OpenAI reports that GPT-6.1 Terra completed tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. At medium reasoning effort, Terra also scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost. These benchmark results suggest a possible advantage for professional workflows, but actual speed will vary depending on the task and software involved.
OpenAI also reports gains in factual accuracy. On its internal test of prompts designed to trigger errors, the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% for GPT-6.1 Terra. At maximum reasoning effort, GPT-6.1 Terra recorded a 4.3% error rate. These figures describe a company-run evaluation, not the likelihood of mistakes in everyday use. In Terminal-Bench 4.0 coding tests, Terra solved 50.3% of tasks at maximum effort, compared with 21.5% for its predecessor.
The GPT-6.1 family also includes GPT-6.1 Sol, which focuses on more demanding professional tasks. Sol offers improvements in software development, debugging, document analysis, and computer control. It can help developers identify coding problems, understand complicated files, and complete workflows that involve several connected steps. OpenAI says Sol approaches the performance of its more powerful GPT-6 Astra model on several tests while costing significantly less.
Pricing is another major part of the launch. Under OpenAI’s standard API rates, GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens under the same standard tier. The lower price may appeal to developers handling frequent, repeatable tasks, although total costs still depend on token use and processing options. Developers can check GPT-6.1 Terra API pricing and limits for additional details.
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can use it through the API with the model name gpt-6.1-terra. GPT-6.1 Sol remains a separate model option for people who need stronger performance on complex coding and professional tasks. Availability in ChatGPT Work and Codex does not mean Terra automatically becomes the default model in every standard ChatGPT conversation.
OpenAI says Terra meets the Critical cybersecurity-capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework and uses safeguards developed for GPT-6 Astra. Its GPT-6.1 Terra safety report describes tests covering unsafe requests and attempts to redirect AI through malicious instructions. Even with these protections, organizations should control app permissions, review important actions and monitor how AI tools handle sensitive data. One risk is prompt injection, where content from an email, web page or document tries to make an AI tool ignore its intended task.
The arrival of GPT-6.1 Terra shows how AI development is moving beyond simply answering questions. Companies increasingly want AI systems that can understand information, operate applications, and complete useful tasks. With faster processing, improved accuracy, and more affordable pricing, GPT-6.1 could help bring advanced AI tools to more professional workflows. Its long-term success will depend on how reliably these improvements perform in real-world situations.
