Pony.ai has unveiled a new Level 4 autonomous electric robotruck as the Chinese self-driving technology company looks to expand its freight business into Europe.
The new heavy-duty electric truck was presented at the IAA Transportation event in Hanover, Germany. It combines electric power with Pony.ai’s autonomous driving technology and is designed to operate with little or no human involvement in certain approved driving conditions.
Level 4 autonomous driving means a vehicle can handle driving tasks without human input within specific areas and conditions. This makes the technology especially useful for freight routes, ports, logistics centers and other controlled transport environments.
Pony.ai developed the new robotruck together with Chinese automaker GAC. The company plans to begin mass production of the vehicle later in 2026, marking another step toward turning autonomous trucks into a larger commercial business.
The company already operates hundreds of autonomous trucks in China, with some vehicles running without a human driver. Pony.ai believes the experience gained from these operations could help it introduce similar technology in international markets.
Europe is becoming an important target for the company. Pony.ai is discussing autonomous truck testing with governments and port operators as it works to understand local regulations and prepare for possible commercial operations.
The company sees strong opportunities in regions where trucking companies face high labor costs or shortages of professional drivers. Autonomous electric trucks could help logistics businesses reduce some operating costs while also supporting efforts to lower emissions from heavy-duty transportation.
However, bringing Level 4 trucks to European roads will require regulatory approvals, safety testing and cooperation with local transport authorities. Rules for fully autonomous commercial vehicles still differ between countries, which means deployment is likely to happen gradually.
Pony.ai plans to expand its robotruck operations into Europe and the Middle East over the next two years. The company is already increasing its autonomous driving presence outside China through other projects, including its robotaxi operations in Europe.
The robotruck launch also comes as competition in electric and autonomous commercial vehicles continues to grow. Chinese and international manufacturers are increasingly introducing battery-powered trucks and advanced driver-assistance technologies for the European freight market.
For Pony.ai, the new Level 4 electric robotruck represents more than a new vehicle. It is part of a wider plan to bring autonomous driving technology into logistics and commercial transportation on a global scale. If regulatory testing and commercial deployment move forward successfully, Europe could become an important market for the company’s next stage of growth.
