Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling technology for the standard PlayStation 5. Announced on October 1, 2026, the feature aims to deliver sharper game graphics and improved image stability without requiring an upgrade to the PS5 Pro.
QSSR builds on PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-powered upscaling technology used on PS5 Pro. Upscaling takes images rendered at a lower resolution and reconstructs them for a sharper display. Sony designed QSSR to bring some of these image-quality benefits to standard PS5 hardware.
The technology focuses on improving fine details and image stability, particularly during movement. It can help reduce flickering and unstable-looking edges in supported games, although the results depend on how developers implement the feature.
QSSR was developed through Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. According to Sony, the technology uses a streamlined neural network and a specially optimized implementation designed to run efficiently on the standard PS5. These improvements help bring AI-assisted image reconstruction to a console that lacks the PS5 Pro’s specialized upscaling capabilities.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games confirmed to support QSSR on standard PS5 consoles. Sony announced patches for both titles on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an optional graphics feature.
Insomniac Games says the technology improves image clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine, helping reveal more detail in locations such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sucker Punch Productions also expects clearer character and environment details in Ghost of Yōtei.
Players who own either supported game should install its latest update and check the game’s graphics options for QSSR. The feature is optional and depends on individual game support. Sony has not announced a universal PS5 setting that enables QSSR across every game.
QSSR marks an important step for standard PS5 owners because Sony’s advanced PSSR upscaling system was previously limited to PS5 Pro. The new technology makes some AI-powered image improvements available on the regular console.
However, QSSR does not make the standard PS5 as powerful as the PS5 Pro. The Pro model continues to use the more advanced PSSR system and offers additional graphics capabilities. QSSR is intended to improve visual clarity on supported standard PS5 games, not guarantee higher frame rates or identical performance across both consoles. TechBonafide has previously examined how AI upscaling differs between PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, potentially allowing more games to support the technology in the future. However, the company has not provided a complete list of upcoming compatible titles or a timetable for wider adoption.
Sony’s QSSR update reflects the growing role of AI in video game graphics. Similar image-reconstruction technology, including NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 for PC gaming, also aims to improve visual quality, although different platforms use their own systems and hardware.
For existing PS5 owners, QSSR offers another way for supported games to improve image quality without a console upgrade. Its wider impact will depend on how many developers adopt it and how well it performs across different games.
