PS5 Pro Gets Smarter Graphics as Sony Expands AI Upscaling to Standard PS5

Sony is expanding AI-powered graphics across the PlayStation 5 family, bringing improved image upscaling to both PS5 Pro and the standard PS5. PS5 Pro now benefits from an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), while the regular PS5 has gained a new technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR).

On PS5 Pro, the โ€œEnhance PSSR Image Qualityโ€ setting allows compatible games built around the earlier PSSR system to use Sonyโ€™s upgraded image-reconstruction technology. The newer version is designed to improve fine-detail clarity and image stability, especially in scenes with movement, complex environments or small visual elements.

PSSR is Sonyโ€™s machine-learning-based image upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It analyzes game frames pixel by pixel and reconstructs a sharper, more detailed image from a lower internal resolution. This can give developers more flexibility to balance visual quality and performance without relying entirely on higher native rendering resolutions.

PS5 Pro still has the more advanced upscaling system, but Sony is now bringing some of the same benefits to the standard PS5. Quick Spectral Super Resolution, announced on October 1, 2026, is a new performance-focused tier of AI upscaling developed through Sony and AMDโ€™s Project Amethyst collaboration.

QSSR uses a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed specifically for standard PS5 hardware. Marvelโ€™s Wolverine and Ghost of Yลtei became the first games to support the technology, offering QSSR as an additional graphics option.

QSSR does not make the standard PS5 equivalent to PS5 Pro. The Pro model still has additional graphics capability and the more advanced PSSR system. Players interested in how resolution, frame rates and ray tracing affect PS5 graphics performance can also see how the console compares with modern PC gaming. Depending on the game, developers can use PS5 Proโ€™s extra capability to improve image quality, frame rates or ray-traced effects.

PS5 Pro also includes a 2TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7 support. The console is sold as an all-digital system, although players who want to use compatible physical games or Blu-ray discs can purchase a compatible disc drive separately.

Price remains an important difference between the two consoles. Sony raised the recommended U.S. price of PS5 Pro to $899.99 effective April 2, 2026, compared with $649.99 for the standard PS5 and $599.99 for the Digital Edition. TechBonafide has also previously tracked changes and promotions affecting PS5 and PS5 Pro prices. The current price gap makes the Pro a more specialized option for players who place a high value on graphics performance, ray tracing and enhanced image quality.

The expansion of AI upscaling across PlayStation also shows how console graphics are evolving. Instead of relying only on more powerful hardware or higher native rendering resolutions, developers can increasingly use machine-learning-based reconstruction to improve image quality while preserving performance.

For PS5 Pro owners, upgraded PSSR continues to make better use of the consoleโ€™s additional graphics capability. For standard PS5 players, QSSR is more significant because it brings AI-guided image reconstruction to hardware that was not originally designed around the feature.

Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, which could allow support to expand beyond its first games over time. PS5 Pro remains the stronger graphics-focused system, but AI upscaling is no longer limited to Sonyโ€™s premium console.
